Peruvian Superfoods: A Healthy and Delicious Revolution
Known for their high nutritional value, superfoods have become a global sensation. Even more so considering that Peru is regarded as the world’s pantry due to its unique variety of superfoods. We spoke with Francisco Osorio Harmsen, co-founder of Bounty Crops on this topic.
How did the idea of exporting Peruvian superfoods come about?
The global demand for high-quality organic superfoods grows yearly due to their incredible nutritional benefits. We had the products, so we created the brand.
Bounty Crops convinced us from the start because it represented everything we wanted to communicate. With that DNA, we began building our identity and carefully assembling each puzzle piece.
We saw an opportunity to accelerate the project through e-commerce, mainly by launching our first store on Amazon.com and Shopify. It hasn’t been easy, but easy is boring—so we’re happy with the journey.
What are Bounty Crops’ top superfoods?
We have several products that stand out for their exceptional nutritional value:
- Organic Maca – A natural energizer in powder and capsule form that boosts vitality, balances hormones, and enhances mood. Rich in vitamins C, B6, and E, as well as calcium, iron, and potassium.
- Organic Quinoa – Available in white and tricolor varieties. The “golden grain of the Andes” is a complete protein containing all nine essential amino acids. Its high fiber and antioxidant content makes it perfect for maintaining energy and supporting digestive health.
- Organic Cacao Powder – More than just a treat, it's a powerful source of flavonoids that protect the heart and help reduce stress. Ideal for healthy drinks and desserts.
- Organic Chia Seeds – Small but mighty! They provide omega-3, fiber, and protein for heart health and balanced digestion.
- Camu Camu – A natural vitamin C powerhouse that strengthens the immune system, improves skin health and offers strong antioxidant properties. Perfect for smoothies, juices, or as a daily supplement.
You have collaborated with Peruvian restaurants to promote these products. How has that experience been?
It has been incredible. Initially, we worked with Amoramar and Café de Lima, where they had already incorporated superfoods into their menus with innovative creations such as:
- Tuna with Three Quinoas and Chonta Salad with Chia Seeds at Amoramar.
- Tricolor Quinoa Fried Rice, Quinoa Caprese, and Camu Chia Bowl at Café de Lima.
Why is it important to include superfoods in our daily diet?
Incorporating these foods into our diet strengthens the immune system, improves digestive and cardiovascular health, provides sustained energy, and helps maintain a healthy weight. Plus, they can be easily combined with the foods we already consume regularly.
You don’t have to be vegan or vegetarian—you can enjoy a delicious recipe that blends both worlds. Fortunately, consumers are becoming more aware of this, and as a result, the demand for superfoods is growing rapidly.
What’s next for Bounty Crops?
There are many steps ahead -I can’t reveal everything- but it’s an ongoing process that involves high-quality ingredients, flawless logistics, and the ever-prominent Peruvian cuisine.
We want more people to discover the taste and power of Andean grains. Healthy eating has never tasted this good!
Any not-so-secret superfood secrets?
As you say, they’re not exactly secrets, but not everyone knows that:
- Quinoa: Although most people consider it a grain, it’s a seed! Plus, it can be used to make a plant-based milk alternative, perfect for those who are lactose intolerant.
- Chia: These tiny seeds can absorb up to 10 times their weight in water, making them a powerful ally for hydration during exercise and prolonging the feeling of fullness.
- Cacao: Raw cacao contains more antioxidants than red wine and green tea combined. Plus, consuming it releases endorphins and serotonin, making you feel happier—hence the nickname “chocolate of happiness.”
- Camu: It’s one of the most potent natural sources of vitamin C in the world—up to 60 times more than an orange! Its high antioxidant content also makes it a natural beauty secret for radiant skin.
- Maca: In ancient times, Incan warriors consumed maca before battles to boost their endurance and strength. Today, it’s known as a powerful adaptogen, helping the body cope with physical and mental stress.
